Living Fabric: A Master Weaver Brings Kutch’s Heritage to Life

ENTERTAINMENT

6 pm, Thursday 6th February

In partnership with Tallentire House

In the quiet hum of a handloom, Shamji Vankar Vishram Valji weaves fabrics that carry stories of Kutch, India—a centuries-old craft rooted in artistry and emotion. On February 6th at 6 pm at Tallentire House, there will be a lecture and demonstration on the mastery and philosophy of slow textiles and sustainability. From February 6th to 9th, during the Galle Literary Festival, Shamji will also be in residence at Tallentire House.

Shamji began weaving as a child, learning the craft from his father, a national award-winning weaver. In 2005, he earned the same prestigious award for his intricate designs and dedication to the supplementary warp technique, a hallmark of Kutch weaving. Over the past 15 years, he has revived natural dyeing, using pomegranate skins, indigo, and madder, while working exclusively with sustainable fibers like kala cotton and desi wool.

“I weave not just fabric; I weave a living fabric that carries oral culture and emotions,” Shamji says. His pieces embody heritage, with each design reflecting its origin’s unique identity.

At Tallentire House, attendees will witness this extraordinary artistry firsthand. Shamji will demonstrate the weaving process on a small handloom, showcasing the meticulous care and skill behind each piece. His creations—scarves, shawls, and more—will be available for purchase, offering visitors a chance to own a piece of history.

In an age of mass production, handwoven textiles stand as a counterpoint to disposable fashion, offering timeless and meaningful beauty. “I weave every piece as unique,” Shamji says. For him, weaving is a way to preserve culture, promote sustainability, and connect people to the stories woven into every thread.

Don’t miss this one-off opportunity at Tallentire House, in the timeless splendour of Galle Fort, this year at Galle Lit Fest.
